Terrorism
There are only two types of terrorism: (1) Terrorism sponsored by Government (most powerful); (2) Terrorism as a consequence of Government (least powerful)

Can We Mix Art and Politics?
The Sri Lanka Government’s attempt to host the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) 2010 ceremony went futile as was predicted early by many political observers. The real reasons for organizing this event in Colombo were enshrouded in mystery and you will know it when you read this blog.
What is IIFA’s mission?
In order to promote Indian cinema in foreign countries, as well as to entertain the Indian Diaspora distributed across the globe, IIFA routinely conducts a performing arts and awards presentation ceremony by partnering with countries that has “exotic” locations. Various cine artists are honored for their outstanding performance for their putative roles.
(Note: IIFA should be renamed as IBFA – International Bollywood Film Academy. Why misuse the word “Indian” when it is all about “Bollywood”?)
Why Sri Lanka this time?
Because the ruling Governments of Sri Lanka and India enjoy Symbiotic relationship in various “strategic businesses” and also because ruling India wants to join Sri Lanka to proclaim to the world community that the little island is no longer a dangerous place for tourists.
What’s wrong in conducting IIFA-2010 in Colombo, Sri Lanka?
This is what the rest of the blog is all about. The role of ruling India during Eelam War-IV (EW4) has been widely acknowledged by both Indian and Sri Lankan rulers. Indian assistance in the form of arms, ammunitions, cluster bombs, chemical weapons, radars, fighter planes, RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) officers in disguise, and even Army Chiefs was sought by Sri Lanka to stand up against the battle with LTTE. Not just the help from ruling India, the Sri Lanka Government has openly agreed that it sought help from 20 different countries to win this battle against LTTE. Whether the mission of “Flushing out the LTTE” was accomplished or whether innocents Tamilians were extensively decimated is left to the curiosity and the ‘sixth-sense’ of the readers. Protests from various Human Rights agencies across the world put a lot of pressure on the United Nations (UN) which acted as a mute spectator for the GENOCIDE to finish, but later publicly announced that it will launch an independent probe to investigate the war crimes that were committed during the EW4. To impede the progress of UN even today, the “accessory-to-the-criminal”, ruling India, used its “Chanakyan-type” skills. Not only that, it also made sure that countries like US, UK and Australia do not come up strong against Sri Lanka. (A loyal accessory, indeed!) Even when Sri Lanka publicly announced that LTTE organization is decimated, ruling India tried hard to come up with reasons so as not to lift the ban on LTTE in India.
How the fate of innocent Tamilians in the little island is linked to IIFA-2010?
To project a positive vibe to international tourists about visiting Sri Lanka, ruling India decided to use its powerful “scapegoat” – the BOLLYWOOD FILM INDUSTRY. The Bollywood stars’ journey to Sri Lanka was believed to send a strong message to the rest of the world about the present “serene security situation” of the island nation. Not only that, this also gives an “expensive” opportunity for the murderers to remove their blood-stains from their respective hands.
The Cascade of Events
The role of people in Tamilnadu in creating awareness about the mystery that enshrouds the IIFA 2010 in Colombo is extremely laudable. Various film/TV artists associations in South India publicly announced their decision to stay away from this politically motivated drama. Veteran and most popular actors such as Kamal Hassan, Mamootty and so many other actors expressed their unwillingness to participate. The Tamil movie industry icon “Rajnikanth” went a step above when he turned down accepting even the invitation. Public awareness created by Lyricist Thamarai and various others who are a part of Tamilnadu movie industry as well as political parties deserves more than a pat on the back. Activists of “Naam Tamilar Group” even staged various soft protests against Amitabh Bachan to express their sentiments and solidarity. Amitab’s decision to step down as an ambassador of IIFA-2010 definitely puts the ruling India to “shame” as other actors such as Shah Rukh, Abishekh, Aishwarya, Katrina, Priyanka, etc. followed Amitab’s footsteps.
Can we mix Art & Politics?
This is a million dollar question – can we mix Art & Politics? As Lyricist Thamarai once nicely said in an interview (and I rephrase here): “Art is not for artists but for people. If people’s lives are at stakes who cares about the art”. This is exactly the underlying reason for the failure of IIFA-2010. When all sorts of military assistance was provided, when scores of people were murdered, when independent investigation was prevented, when lakhs of civilians were put in a refugee camp by its own Government without proper food and shelter, when journalists (local and foreign) were denied access to these refugee camps, when the security of women are at highest risks, when people live their everyday life without knowing whether their parents or their kith and kin are live, when people are not sure whether they will be alive or not when they woke up, should we not expect Tamilians to express their express solidarity for their fellow Tamils in Sri Lanka? And when that happens, should we not expect the Tamil Film Industry to back up this protest movement? And when that happens, should we not expect fellow movie stars from neighboring states to join us to stand up against the ruling SL/India Government for a “REAL CAUSE”? And when that happens, should we not expect the other citizens in India and across the globe to take some time to think about the situation instead of “jumping-to-a-conclusion” too fast? When the entire Mumbai was in a state of deep shock during the 9/11 attack, we the Tamilians joined their sorrow and expressed our solidarity. When we the Tamilians were stuck by a huge blow about the prevailing situations in Sri Lanka, how can the Mumbai stars do not heed to our sentiments, but decided to perform some item numbers to entertain the island nation? Who do I turn into to get answers for these questions?
What IIFA-2010 means to Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka was assured that it will make tons of money by hosting IIFA-2010. A reported 500 to 1000 million rupees was spent to organize this extravagant ceremony. While the majority of dailies in Sri Lanka already predicted and pointed out the fate of this poorly-orchestrated and worst-ever IIFA event, some of the magazines (sympathesizers of Rajapakse’s government) and the organizers of IIFA-2010 embarked on an attempt to fool the citizens. To make things even worse, President Rajapakse did not even attend this IIFA-2010 event and rumor has it that the poor representation of Bollywood movie artists was the reason. As nicely pointed out by a magazine, “IIFA-2010 is a wedding party without a bride and groom”.
Did the ruling governments of India/Sri Lanka learn lessons this time?
Only time can answer!
Ps: I am an Indian. This does not necessarily mean I have to abide by my ruling Government’s reckless foreign policies and procedures. Also, the ruling parties perform various acrobatic stunts and dramas to keep up the power, but my patriotic feeling for India will be "UNPERTURBED" because it is "pure and unbiased".

Dear IIFA Directors/Sponsors/Concerned,
I am in an enormous shock to see such a dignified forum is planning
to have its prestigious award ceremony in a land that is accused of
war crimes and genocide. People from across the globe are condemning
the Human rights violations of Srilankan government.
And civilized society is fighting hard to establish the justice to
the tamils. Killing of nearly 1,40,000 innocents, war crimes,
ongoing slaughter on the journalists, moderates, reformists, artists
and having opposition leader behind the bars make the Srilanka as a
criminal and a failed state.
People’s Permanent Tribunal found Srilanka guilty of war crimes and
Genocide.
UN’s Human Rights Chief is critical of Lankan government Human rights
records.
US human rights report accused Lankan rulers for the Human Rights
violations.
I urge you to change the venue of your event; else this will
strengthen and encourage the government that is involved in the
human rights violations. It will be too ugly and gory to have the
favorite stars to dance in the Tamils’ graveyard.
This is the high time for you to respect not just the sentiments of
Tamils across globe but more importantly respecting the human rights.
Please change the venue to a different country. It will honor you.
For your reference i am attaching the website
(http://www.tamilsagainstgenocide.org/) which provides more details about
the war crimes committed against the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Ratan Tata - Human, Institution or God???

What Ratan Tata did for the Mumbai victims.... what every Indian should know!
Ratan Tata is the chairman of Indian Hotels who own the Taj Mahal Hotel Mumbai, which was the target of the terrorists on 26/11/08.
Hotel President a 5 star property also belongs to Indian Hotels.
The following is really touching.
What Ratan Tata did for the Mumbai victims.... Don't miss!!!!!!
SALUTE TO MR. RATAN TATA
A. The Tata Gesture
1. All category of employees including those who had completed even 1 day as casuals were treated on duty during the time the hotel was closed.
2. Relief and assistance to all those who were injured and killed
3. The relief and assistance was extended to all those who died at the railway station, surroundings including the “Pav- Bha ji” vendor and the pan shop owners.
4. During the time the hotel was closed, the salaries were sent by money order.
5. A psychiatric cell was established in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences to counsel those who needed such help.
6. The thoughts and anxieties going on people’s mind was constantly tracked and where needed psychological help provided.
7. Employee outreach centers were opened where all help, food, water, sanitation, first aid and counseling was provided. 1600 employees were covered by this facility.
8. Every employee was assigned to one mentor and it was that person’s responsibility to act as a “single window” clearance for any help that the person required.
9. Ratan Tata personally visited the families of all the 80 employees who in some manner – either through injury or getting killed – were affected.
10. The dependents of the employees were flown from outside Mumbai to Mumbai and taken care off in terms of ensuring mental assurance and peace. They were all accommodated in Hotel President for 3 weeks.
11. Ratan Tata himself asked the families and dependents – as to what they wanted him to do.
12. In a record time of 20 days, a new trust was created by the Tatas for the purpose of relief of employees.
13. What is unique is that even the other people, the railway employees, the police staff, the pedestrians who had nothing to do with Tatas were covered by compensation. Each one of them was provided subsistence allowance of Rs. 10K per month for all these people for 6 months.
14. A 4 year old granddaughter of a vendor got 4 bullets in her and only one was removed in the Government hospital. She was taken to Bombay hospital and several lacs were spent by the Tatas on her to fully recover her.
15. New hand carts were provided to several vendors who lost their carts.
16. Tata will take responsibility of life education of 46 children of the victims of the terror.
17. This was the most trying period in the life of the organization. Senior managers including Ratan Tata were visiting funeral to funeral over the 3 days that were most horrible.
18. The settlement for every deceased member ranged from Rs. 36 to 85 lacs [One lakh rupees tranlates to approx 2200 US $ ] in addition to the following benefits:
a. Full last salary for life for the family and dependents;
b. Complete responsibility of education of children and dependents – anywhere in the world.
c. Full Medical facility for the whole family and dependents for rest of their life.
d. All loans and advances were waived off – irrespective of the amount.
e. Counselor for life for each person
B. Epilogue
1. How was such passion created among the employees? How and why did they behave the way they did?
2. The organization is clear that it is not something that someone can take credit for. It is not some training and development that created such behaviour. If someone suggests that – everyone laughs
3. It has to do with the DNA of the organization, with the way Tata culture exists and above all with the situation that prevailed that time. The organization has always been telling that customers and guests are #1 priority
4. The hotel business was started by Jamshedji Tata when he was insulted in one of the British hotels and not allowed to stay there.
5. He created several institutions which later became icons of progress, culture and modernity. IISc is one such institute. He was told by the rulers that time that he can acquire land for IISc to the extent he could fence the same. He could afford fencing only 400 acres.
6. When the HR function hesitatingly made a very rich proposal to Ratan – he said – do you think we are doing enough?
7. The whole approach was that the organization would spend several hundred crore in re-building the property – why not spend equally on the employees who gave their life?
This is NOT COVERED BY Any NEWS CHANNELS !
I Salute Mr. Ratan Tata..

Global vs. Local
I always wanted to be local. I am comfortable that way. The concept of being global enticed me a little bit in my early days of USA just like I got enticed to touch the star on the sky when I was a little boy. Very soon I realized I can't touch a star! And I realized I can't be global either. Honestly, I do no want to be global!
The general definition of being global is demonstrating ability to tolerate and follow foreign cultures/lifestyles in addition to one's own. However, more often I found myself in a situation where I am expected to embrace foreign lifestyle at the expense of my own. When I publicly mourned about the Virginia Tech tragedy which cost the lives of 32 innocent people, I am categorized as 'Global'. At the same time, when I wrote articles and had intense debates about the freedom of Tamils in Sri Lanka or about the massacre of my innocent people, I am criticized 'local'. When I discussed American politics, I was considered Global. Talking about lack of electricity and water problems in hundreds of villages in India is considered local. Hanging out in a group full of people who speak a language that only I don't understand put me as 'global'. Wanting to marry a Tamil Lady made me 'local'.
Another thing that pisses me off these days is this. Why is the word 'Global' synonymous with the word 'western'? I despise this anomaly from my very inner core. By default westerners are categorized as people who are broad minded and global. Everyone who wanted to be global displays characteristics that a 'westerner' does. But, a native westerner is surprisingly "ill-informed" about things that are not local in which case these guys are behaving like "ultra locals". Why would I care about being global (read 'westerner') when the so called 'global' person doesn't even have a modicum of understanding about events happening in a foreign soil?
I was constantly bombarded by my friends and relatives in India about questions related to America - for ex, Is Obama going to win the Presidential election? Is NASA going to send another space shuttle? Can America recover from financial debts? Is Avatar a big hit in America like in India? I shut their mouth once and for all when I said I do not even read the headlines of American dailies. Honestly, my source for American news is primarily Indian dailies.
There are a few things that I can never compromise. My country stands out first in the list. Only by being local I get to love my country this much. I could be living in a foreign soil, but I can never compromise my country for anything. My country gave me so much and expects me to reciprocate not to herself but to the needy. If money is not a possibility, at least a couple of tear drops will suffice.
I was born as a Tamilian, I will die as a Tamilian. I was born as an Indian, I will die as an Indian.

Operation Green Hunt
(The following letter is sent to the Editor of the famous Indian daily - "The Hindu")
Sir,
The recent killing of 75 CRPF men by Maoists delineated two important things:(1)Our strategy towards Maoists is certainly "weak". The CRPF is unable to capitalize their positions in enemy zones. (2) In one way or the other, the Maoists are given "enough" updates about the moves of the Government. It seems they also knew when to attack and when to be silent. It is about time the government stop playing the 'negotiation game' with the Maoists and come forward to retaliate strong and swift. Doing this will at least increase the credibility of the UPA government a little bit which is currently struggling to reduce the skyrocketing prices of mundane items, to pass the women's bill, to gain access to deadly "Headley", to solve the "ever-unsolvable" water problem of Tamilnadu with its bordering states.
Sincerely,
Boobalan.

Us & Them ...(part I)
[I started a new section called "Us and Them". Us is the opinion of a common man like me. Them is the rest of the community]
Them: A newspaper report says Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary General, wants probe on Sri Lanka War crimes committed against innocent tamils.
Us: Yeh, right!!! Were you sleeping when artillery shells, cluster bombs, phosphorous bombs, etc. were used by the SL govt. against their own citizens? It's almost a year now since the massacre has happened and the local government already did its best to coverup the issue. It's saddening to hear from someone who is the secretary general of United Nations to bring up this issue now. Let's say even if you set up a Jury and the the Jury did prove all the malicious activities of the SL government, what power do you think you have Mr. Moon to take actions against SL? Do you think China and India will allow you to act on your will? Also, if Sri Lanka is charged with the first degree crime, then a bunch of other countries has to be charged as well for 'aiding and abetting'. Do you think this can be done? I really doubt it. It is a sad fact that no major powers like to give their support for the tamils in Sri Lanka. Else, the war would not have tragically ended the way it was ended. When the situation was very intense and more than 10000s of people were killed, I still remember what a permanent security council member told in an interview: "....the situation is devastating. The reports say more than 100s of people were killed if not 1000". This tells how UN tried to underplay the situation. UN do not even have the guts to admit the truth "at the moment". I completely lost my trust on UN during this war situation. I'm sure anyone who follows the SL situation will agree with me.
Them: A newspaper report says India plans to set up a new embassy in Sri Lanka
Us: Of course, now that the China is becoming a close ally to SL, there never was a better time for India to help SL even more. I'm sure few hundred millions of dollars of Indian tax payer's money goes north to Afghanistan and a similar amount goes south to SL under the name of "strengthening the bilateral relationship between two countries". But the sad fact is that there are more than 5000 villages in India where people are still living without electricity.
Them: Pakistan's foreign minister said in a newspaper that India did not demand arrest of JuD chief Saeed.
Us: Ha ha. Mr. FM... we have sent more than 5 dossiers of informations about the 26/11 questions that you asked. Saeed's name takes the lead during all our communications. Every common man who knew about 26/11 knew for sure Saeed is one of the perpetrators and we want to at least interrogate him. When the world around you is as informed as this, it is sad to see your statement. You guys repeatedly talked about having talks yet no tangible solution comes out of it. When I see what happened post 26/11, I must say your Govt. succeeded in handling the situation the way you wanted!!! Our diplomacy failed as expected!!!

Animal Kingdom...
[Forwarded email from a friend..very funny and true about research scholars!!!]
Once a man went to a Veterinary Doctor and said:
Doctor I have come on vacation for a month so that I can get myself treated fully within this period.
Doctor: I think you should go to the Doctor opposite to my clinic, see that board.
Man: No, Doctor, I have come to you only
Doctor: But, gentleman I am a Veterinary Doctor. I am an animal specialist. I do not treat human beings.
Man: I know, Doctor very well and that is why I have come to you only...
Doctor: I can not, because you speak like me, think like me, talk like me which means you are a human being and not an animal.
Man: I know I am a human but listen to my complaints first:
Doctor: OK. Tell me.
Man:
I sleep like dog thinking about my work load whole night.
I get up in the morning like a horse
I go to work running like a deer
I work all the day in my lab like a donkey
I keep on planning for new projects and thesis like a fox
I run around for 12 months like a bull without any holidays.
I wag my tail in front of all my superiors
Doctor: are you a Research Scholar?
Man: Yes !!
Doctor: Instead of telling this long history you should have told me in the beginning itself that you are a Research Scholar. Come man, no one can treat you better than me.

Q & A - Part I
(Here is a new section that I just started. Q & A!! I ask questions, I give answers. Strange, huh???)
The current section is primarily about politics and related.
Question: From your point of view, who is the greatest politician ever?
Ans: K. Kamaraj. Undoubtedly, the BEST!!! I'm more than certain we (Tamilnadu people) will NEVER find someone who can equal K.Kamaraj.
Question: What is so strange about Tamilnadu?
Ans: The Government approved "English" but deliberately protested "Hindi" - the national language of India!!!
Question: What is sad about Tamilnadu?
Ans: The political parties buy voters these days.
Question: One thing that you're so impressed about Karunanidhi
Ans: He WON all the elections that he contested. No one that I knew achieved this feat!!!
Question: One thing that makes you so mad at Karunanidhi
Ans: When the Sri Lankan forces were brutally committing the massacre at the Northern regions killing innocent Tamils, Karunanidhi - who claims himself as the Savior for the Tamils - went to Delhi to bargain positions for his ministers. What a shame!!! When people's lives are at stakes, our chief minister was fighting to get seats for his son, daughter, relatives and other party members.
Question: What is the saddest thing about Congress party?
Ans: Since Independence (1947), the Nehru family ruled India for at least 37 years. If I consider Manmohan's present and past terms, both of which were technically ruled by Sonia Gandhi, the number goes to 43 years. This implies that "may be the rest of the Indian families are not that competent compared to Nehru family"!!! Or, should I say Dynasty rules???!!!
Question: When you think of MGR, what is the first thing that always strikes your mind?
Ans: MGR's support for Tamil Eelam struggle in Sri Lanka and his generous monetary donation to LTTE.
Question: Is Rajiv Gandhi's assassination justified?
Ans: It is certainly justified in Tamil Eelam's soil
Question: Name three Leaders who impressed you the most!
Ans: Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, V. Prabhakaran, and none
(Part-II will be up shortly!!!)

Things of the Past - I
Some prime events that happened around the world that got my attention:
(1) Sachin crafted a classy 200 runs in cricket while playing for India against Republic of South Africa. The first-ever man on the Planet to achieve this stupendous task!!! Bravo Sachin. But hopefully you will retire after the 2011 world cup and pave way for the youngsters.
(2) Minority Indians gets attacked in India and elsewhere. The ruling Government manages to act as a mute spectator, as always!!! One of the Greatest Artists India has ever produced, M.F.Husain, was conferred Qatar nationality recently. His paintings that blatantly portrayed the sexuality in ancient Indian culture received huge criticism from communal forces and hence the Legend was forced to vacate India. Two points to consider: (1) We no longer can boast the mantra "Unity in Diversity"; that's just to fool foreigners & local kids. (2) The level of creativity and imagination incorporated in Art should be left to Artists and not to politicians and other communal forces. Enough damage was already done on Indian constitution and now the politicians are expanding their horizons to ruin the world of paintings, movies, etc.
(3) Hamas Leader al-Mabhouh was mysteriously killed in a Hotel room in Dubai. The Israeli spy agency Mossad was the prime suspect in this thriller-killer event. About 18 passports were doctored and was used illegally to carry out this. Bravo Mossad if you're indeed behind this!!! In contemporary context, nations protect sovereignty by speaking diplomacy overtly and perform secret operations using their spy-agencies (KGB, CIA, MI5, RAW, ISI and now Mossad) by supporting covert operations such as this. If this continues, I expect to see Stones and sticks in the near future as fighting tools if you know what I mean. Well, I won't be there to see, but let's see!!!
(4) Hilarity Clinton recommended the Senate to approve few more billon USA dollars as an aid to Pakistan. America's foreign policy towards Pakistan is really confusing to me. Well, technically its not confusing when I realize that America is playing a dual game to both us (India) and Pakistan. On on end, America publicly impeach Pakistan that they must dismantle all terror groups for the benefit of their own as well as the world. On other end, they provide all funds and train Pakistani men to raise their standards. The fact of the matter is most of the USA-funds given to Pakistan are used to boost-up their covert and overt attacks against Indians. It's like a food chain process. America gives money to Pakistan which in turn is used to train pakistani men. These men (both military as well as ISI guys) in turn train terrorists organizations who in turn targets us either in India or Afghanistan or elsewhere. America turned a Nelson's eye despite our repetitious attempts to bring this issue to them.
(5) One of the prime suspects behind the 26/11 attacks that happened in Mumbai, David Headley alias Daood Gilani, is under America's custody for almost 5 months. He was arrested for his alleged involvement with terrorist organizations and planning several attacks in India and elsewhere. And now, what pisses me off is the "utterly inadequate diplomatic skills" showed off by Indian rulers in convincing America to deport Headley to India. We can't even get access to a terrorist from our "so-called" ally, let alone getting access to Saeed (Jamaat-ud-Dawaah Chief) from Pakistan. For christ's sake, it took more than 4 months to even get the recent photograph of Headley. India needs to get access to this men ASAP in order to circumvent future attacks because this 'deadly Headley' visited various "hot" spots in India and captured videos. The master plans must have been laid already for future attacks and America must come forward to save Indians/other citizens. I've a question to American diplomats now. "If India gets to possess the custody of mastermind behind 9/11, wouldn't you be doing anything at any cost at an unbelievable pace to gain access to those terrorists - Yes or No??"
(6) China likes to live in a fantasy world. Not only they don't have democracy in their country, but also they develop symptoms to not to perceive democratic feelings of alien countries. Since when China developed the power to control whether or not an Indian Prime Minister should go to Arunachal Pradesh? Since when China developed the power to control whether or not should Indian/American diplomats should meet Dalai Lama or not? Out of the blue, China demonstrated immense interests for the development of Sri Lanka . Or, should it be to belittle South India? China considers India as its potential enemy from the South Asian region and doesn't want us to progress in any quarters. Agreed that China has a huge economy, very powerful military and is not nearly as corrupted as India is (thanks to our shameless politicians!!!). However, China can never come close to India - not even in dreams - when certain important parameters are considered. Few of them are: (i) Diversity; (ii) respect for fellow citizens; (iii) communication skills; (iv) IT sector; (v) Role of a civilian in deciding the ruling Government; (vi) A mixture of traditional values and modern thoughts!!!
That's it for now...I hope to write "Things of the Past - II" soon. Keep checking. Adieux!!!!

Aayirathil Oruvan

[Note: (1) Picture source for Selva: www.Indiaglitz.com. (2) This is second in the series of articles about Aayirathil Oruvan. Please click http://boobalanp.blogspot.com/2010/01/aayirathil-oruvan-part-i.html to read the first one]
Aayirathil Oruvan: Part-II Selva-the-Great!!!
Except a countable number of examples, the ideas usually expressed in Tamil movies are way too cliche with very predictable endings. Very, very few directors tried too hard to think outside the box in order to set a new trend. One such privileged member is Director Selvaraghavan, whose magnum opus "Aayirathil Oruvan (AO)" is one of the best movies I have seen in my life so far. I was virtually dumbfounded when I saw the trailer and could not hold the breath to see the movie. And when I did see the movie I was like "Wow!!!". Selva made a daring attempt and went beyond what any director would have never even dreamed off. Hats off to Selva for his wild imagination, wonderful execution and top of all for elevating the level-of-intellect required to watch a Tamil movie.
AO is NOT just a movie. It is a "compendium of extraordinary research" carried out on various topics like Cholas, Archeology, Classical Tamil, Music, creating 12th-century like specimens, lyrics in chaste Tamil written by Kavignar Vairamuthu, synchronizing the acts of several 100s of people in every frame and that too for more than 60 mins, etc. It truly amazes me how Selva single-handedly extracted work from people of various departments. I truly felt that almost every scene in AO is watchable more than twice or thrice or even more. Very very few directors (including the ones from Hollywood) can make a movie like this.
There are lot of scenes in this movie that hit my nerves really hard. Let me describe a few scenes I truly liked.
(1) A team of three people has to cross a desert land that is made up of sinking sand. There is only one way to avoid the death and that trail will be visible only during sunrise and sunset, and that too for a matter of few seconds. Some twelve gigantic stone pillars were planted in the middle of the desert such that only during sunrise and sunset, the shadow of the pillar will resemble "Lord Siva" in his "Dancing Nataraja" pose. The team in two different attempts - one during sunset and the other during the next sunrise - successfully cross the desert by following Lord Shiva's leg to reach his veil in order to avoid the sinking sand. This visually stunning scene is complemented by extraordinary cinematography and scintillating music which increases the blood-flow to my brain. To the best of my knowledge, this is the best movie scene I've seen in my life. (This scene will be better explained by watching than in writing)
(2) Moving on, I really liked the scene where Parthiban addresses the crowd and tells them that two days from that day they will set off to Tanjai. The dialogues in that scene literally got me so emotional. It tells how desperate the citizens are to go back to Tanjai because the diaspora is living outside the homeland for 800+ years. There’s also a very subtle humor by a 200 year old person before sacrificing his life. (Some people told me this scene was deleted when they watched the movie)
(3) The theme music “Celebration of life” and Parthiban’s apt dance was just stunning. Especially the flute like sound that comes when Karthi joins dancing. I don't know what music instruments they used, but the music hits my nerves real hard.
(4) Parthiban’s entry and the music track “The king arrives” is truly a visual treat.
(5) Reema's performance is in par with excellence. Especially the scene where she sword fights with Parthiban, and the one where she breaks free to prove she is a Cholan. How many people understood this scene? How many people understood that the person in the fire-art is Raja Raja Chola, the Great??
Selvaraghavan attempted something that most directors in Tamil, even in India for that matter, has never even dreamed off!!! I repeatedly hear from the media saying Tamil movie plots are so mundane and boring and all that. However, when a movie like AO was attempted in an unseen genre, the media is busy giving pathetic reviews instead of praising the hard-work behind it. AO is not the type of movie one can go and watch in a nonchalant manner; it requires your utmost attention. How many viewers paid close attention to Ramji's cinematography/G.V.Prakash's music/Art work/Costume design? I paid attention to all these departments and I just loved it. I honestly feel Selva worked his every body cell to make AO a memorable movie till the end of time. He achieved 100% success from my point of view. The movie has few flaws but that did not jade me from watching multiple times.
ps: Selva..if you’re reading this..”I love you so much for making AO”. You’re the “MAN”!!!
Heartless Brain!!!
The battle between my brain and heart will never cease, I guess. The brain is so dominating. It always wanted to do what it wants to do immaterial of what heart wants. Heart, on the other hand, mildy puts the request and quietly stand aside when the request is not entertained. Clearly, the "Brain is Heartless". Occasionally, they do meet at a focal point when their interests are identical.
Today, my brain is overwhelmed with reading a lot about Histone Deacetylases (an enzyme implicated in cancer)..whereas my heart wants me to take a break from science in order to read "Ponniyin Selvan" - an epic book written about the Chola Kingdom. It's been quite sometime I am thinking of reading this epic book written by Kalki, but for some reason or the other I keep procrastinating. Karthi inspired me a lot to read the book and I really hope to read this 2400-pages book sometime soon.

ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் (Aayirathil Oruvan) - Part 1
உதாரணத்திற்கு, "cannibal holocaust ", Lord of the rings, Gladiator, மற்றும் operation condor.

Bogi Festival!!!
Back home it is Bogi festival today - the first of the four festival days lined up in a row. This sooo makes me feel nostalgic and reminds me the festive milieu. A big bonfire at very early in the morning, house entrance decorated with colorful "kolam", cowdung-ball in the middle, sitting atop a pumpkin flower and waiting for the sunrays so our street gang can resume playing cricket from thereafter!

Salute the Cops!
Two incidents that is related to Indian Police officers shocked me, literally.
(1) The 26/11 martyr Mr. Hemant Karkare, chief of Anti-terror squad, Mumbai division, was found to be wearing a bullet-proof jacket that was made of low quality. Thanks to the media, especially, CNN-IBN, for shedding light on this topic. How can the manufacturer make such a jacket that do not assure the safety when someone like Mr. Karkare wears it and risks his life to save others? And, under what pretext does the police officials partner with the manufacturing company? Or, where there some under the table dealings? Lot of youngsters in India aspire to join the police department and the military to serve the nation. Now they must think twice!
(2) This one is really gruesome and this happened in my state, Tamilnadu (South India). Mr. R. Vetrivel, a sub-inspector of Police, was "mistakenly" murdered by gangsters who were looking to kill another sub-inspector. To make things even worse, the 'bleeding-to-death' Vetrivel was not given due assistance by none other than the personnel who "embellish" Indian democracy - The Politicians! The Tamilnadu Health Minister Mr. M.R.K Pannerselvam and the environment minister T.P.M. Moideen Khan happened to pass by the bleeding inspector who was 'literally' dying to get help. However, these 'caretakers-of-the-democracy' decided not to take care of the police inspector, instead called the ambulance and waited for it arrive. May be the ministers thought for a moment they are living in America where the ambulance arrives the spot in a matter of few minutes. Or, may be they thought their luxurious vehicles are just not right for the dying inspector. Or, may be the ministers' IQ levels were not up to a respectable mark and hence they do not know how to react to a spontaneity. It does not matter what justifications they provide, but the bottom-line is Mr. R. Vetrivel died in 30 mins.
The Police force/security force in my state, or for any other state in India for this matter, is "always" misused. Politicians would not just go to places should the 'band of police brothers' be not with them. Not just 1 or 2, sometimes hundreds of police officers are called for to provide security to just "one politician". But sadly, the police to public ratio is only 1:632 in Tamilnadu; meaning, there is only ONE police for 632 civilians. And the worst part is the police officers are the ones who are affected the most by the politicians. Whenever there is a change in power and a new party takes over the government, police officers from commissioner level to constable level are always relocated to different places. During every public meeting, the politicians always bring out a trite remark on police people. Whenever there is a public nuisance created by politicians with 'no rhyme or reason', police face the criticisms from both the public and the Government as well as the media. The politicians intently tie the hands of police to not to react to a situation but later reprimand them for keeping quiet. And now, to the present case, these Health and Environment ministers (what an Irony!) were provided security by 1000s of police-men during their political career, however, they did not reciprocate back to Vetrivel during the 'Golden hour' when his life was hanging in a balance, but instead let him die. The kind of "actual help" the politicians provide to the society is plummeting every day. It is about time to suppress these 'cancerous-type' cells to help save India. And no, democracy is NOT the treatment!

3 Idiots!!!
Idiot 1: Aamir Khan, for publicly claiming he did not read the book "five point someone" by Chetan Bhagat. Aamir's acting performance was abysmal in real life.
Idiot 2: Rajkumar Hirani, for not giving sufficient credits to Chetan Bhagat, at the same time thinks himself and Joshi actually should be credited for the story. (story credits for 3 idiots was given to Hirani and Joshi)
Idiot 3: V.V. Chopra, for his condemnable public behavior, plagiarism & copyright violation.
I admire the way Chetan Bhagat handled this controversy. I'm sure these three idiots learned something from the Erudite Scholar!
